On April 30th, May 1st and May 2nd, 2010, College Hunks Hauling Junk will be sponsoring The North Central Crossfit Regional Games in Castle Rock, Colorado at the Douglas County Event Center. The College Hunks will be helping with the setup, teardown, and delivery of the equipment to the event site.
The CrossFit Games are the ultimate test of fitness. It’s a grueling three-day competition in which the world’s fittest athletes compete in a variety of workouts. What are the workouts? Each year they change, and the details of them are not announced until a couple days before the event. The regional games are a means to qualify for the 2010 World Crossfit Games held in Aromas, CA on July 16-18, 2010.

In a joint effort, NAPO (Nat’l Assoc. of Professional Organizers) organizers and College Hunks Hauling Junk volunteered their expertise to help low-income seniors from Volunteers of America’s Sunset Towers downsize, de-clutter, and organize their homes. After a short education presentation, the volunteers assisted four senior residents with hands-on space planning and organization.
The average home in an active senior community has two bedrooms and a significantly smaller number of square footage than their previous home. Retirees also spend more time at home than adults under 65 years of age. Both factors lead to an increased risk of overcrowded rooms. Cluttered and unsafe storage create hazardous surroundings for seniors and contribute to falls and injuries in the home. More than one third of adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States and twenty percent to 30% of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as bruises, hip fractures or head traumas. These injuries can limit mobility and hamper independent living.
College Hunks Hauling Junk removed a number of unwanted items from the seniors homes and provided the labor and know-how with moving large items within the households.
Volunteers of America is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping older Americans live safely and independently in their own homes.

Recently, MSNBC profiled College Hunks Hauling Junk about teaching our college-age employees a few life lessons outside the classroom.
Most of those employed by College Hunks Hauling Junk are only employed for the short term, but that doesn’t mean that the experience isn’t valuable for them. The job of the employees is much more involved than simply hauling junk. Each truck is run as its own small business with the employees on the truck in charge. They manage many different aspects of this “business” and are given the freedom to manage their own time and day. This autonomy gives the employees the chance to learn about running their own small business and how to manage ones time effectively and efficiently. The team members take care of billing clients, drumming up new business, the hauling of junk, and generally managing their own day. This approach allows the employees to get much more out of the experience than simply a paycheck, and ultimately, gives them the skills to operate their own business someday. Beyond the employees managing their own day, they are also encouraged to offer up ideas and suggestions to improve the company as a whole. By operating in this manner, it makes for an open work environment that allows us to continue having “the leaders of tomorrow haul your junk today!”

The College Hunks Hauling Junk BBQ on Sunday April 26th started off with a bang – I forgot the most crucial ingredients (the hamburgers and hot dogs) to any successful BBQ at my house! Once I retrieved them, the party was underway. We had a great spread of delicious hamburgers, hot dogs, lemonade, College Hunks Hauling Junk branded water bottles, a $150 Junk Removal Gift Certificate, free t-shirts, and orange snack foods (like Cheetos and Doritos!). Everyone who came by got a free College Hunks Hauling Junk t-shirt!
It appeared that the weather gods were looking on us kindly – the sun was shining and the temperature was perfect. Lots of people stopped by to quickly scarf down a hot dog or hamburger and then get back to their work while others stayed for a few hours. By 3pm though, the weather had turned for the worse – the temperature dropped twenty degrees and it began to rain.
Despite the unruly weather, we collected over one hundred pairs of sneakers with many more promised to be donated in the next few days. Thank you to everyone that stopped by the BBQ and donated sneakers. The donated shoes will be much appreciated by the charity!

You are invited to the College Hunks Hauling Junk Spring Cleaning BBQ on Sunday, April 26th from 11am to 5pm. Come meet the Hunks, eat some delicious barbecue, and win some prizes! We will also be collecting old and used sneakers to cap our spring donation drive. All sneakers will be donated to underprivileged people in third world countries.
We will be setup at the Northeast corner of Washington Park at S Franklin St and E Virginia Ave (look for the big, bright orange truck!) from 11am to 5pm on Sunday. We will be giving away prizes and gift certificates for free junk removal services. Everyone is welcome! Bring your friends and families. The ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ walk will be taking place at Washington Park this Sunday, April 26th as well.

Beginning March 15th, 2009, College Hunks Hauling Junk will be collecting used sneakers and tennis shoes to help less fortunate people who cannot afford shoes. If you have any old pairs of sneakers, we will gladly donate them to the cause.
Our goal is to collect and distribute 100,000 to 1,000,000 pairs of used shoes to the underprivileged from all of the College Hunks franchisees.
We are capping off the sneaker drive with a Spring Cleaning BBQ on April 26, 2009, at Washington Park in the Northeast corner at Franklin and Virginia, Denver, CO, so we’d love for you to join us! We will be giving away Junk Bonds for FREE junk removal services and we will have other fun and games for families and kids.
