The death of a loved one of family member is a topic that nobody enjoys thinking about but is inevitable for all of us. When this does occur there are many things that need to be taken care of and the cleanout of properties is one of the most stressful and time consuming. It is also hard in many cases for the family of the deceased to look at their loved ones items objectively making it hard to decide what should be thrown out, kept, or sold. Having a third party who can look at the items objectively and make some of those decisions for you can be a big help in the process. A junk removal service can come in and get the property cleaned out quickly, efficiently, and respectfully. They will help assist with making decisions about what should be sold or thrown out and have the resources and man power to get all of this accomplished in a timely manner so the problems can be resolved as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Here are some more tips from an article in Women’s Magazine, provided by Liz Canavan, a professional organizer in Boulder, CO:
- Depending on how long ago you lived there, make sure to get your stuff out first (i.e. 13 years of yearbooks, framed diplomas and a pair of colorful wool socks that should have stayed in year 1996). If you’ve already done this over the years, count yourself ahead of the game.
- Coach your parents on what to pass onto someone else. Do they love it, use it or need it? If yes, keep it. If no, pass it on. Challenge them on this step, because they might want to keep a lot more than they’ll ever take care of or use.
- Remove the stuff. See the full article for more info.

Everyone holds on to items that they don’t have a use for but hold on to because of sentimental value or the hopes of needing it in the future. While there is no problem with holding onto a few items for later use, it can become a problem when someone begins to hold on to every item that enters their household. Compulsive hoarding is a major problem that people face and, in many cases, may need assistance dealing with. It has been found that compulsive hoarding poses safety as well as psychological risks.
College Hunks Hauling Junk has partnerships with professional organizers, in the Denver Metro area that can help bring order back to an individual’s life. In a hoarding situation, organize and sort their items. College Hunks Hauling Junk can help de-clutter and remove the excess items that have become problematic.

Here are a few questions that we get asked regularly:
- Where do you take the stuff?
A: We recycle over 60% of the items we remove: the metal, computer equipment, appliances, and renovation debris are all separated at the transfer centers. As a perk for our college employees, we allow them to keep a lot of the items they find on the job. The remaining items are either donated or disposed of if they’re purely junk.
- Is everyone really a hunk or in college?
A: ‘Hunk’ is a subjective term so we always tell people they can join our screening panel. But really we try to hire clean-cut, friendly and professional collegiate teams to give our clients the best experience possible. The majority of our employees are college students, especially during the summertime, but we also have a lot of part-time students and recent graduates on our team as well.
- What’s the craziest junk you’ve seen?
A: Some of the more valuable items include boxes of mint-condition vintage playboys, a Gibson Guitar worth $1,500, and a storage unit full of autographed Willie Mays and Hank Aaron balls and bats.

When people think of junk removal companies, they typically need to remove unwanted items, such as old furniture, broken appliances, construction debris, or yard waste that they otherwise cannot dispose of themselves. Most professional junk removal companies provide a two-man junk team, a large truck, and a dolly. To get the best value when hiring a junk removal company, follow these eight simple rules:
- UNDERSTAND THE PRICING: Typically, the cost of the junk removal depends on the AMOUNT of junk you want to dispose of. If you have fewer items to get rid of, then you will pay a lower price. Use a junk calculator to get a better idea of how much space your items will take up in the truck.
- DISCOUNTED SERVICE: Often, special discounts are available for those who take advantage of online booking.
- ON THE PHONE: Junk removal companies usually have toll-free customer care representatives available 24 hours a day. We recommend choosing a junk removal whose customer care representatives are professional, friendly and helpful. When speaking with a customer care representative, inquire about whether the company is fully licensed, bonded and insured. Also, inquire whether the junk removal company recycles or donates the items that they remove – ask for a recycling percentage.
- SETTING THE APPOINTMENT: Book early in the morning – you will get a team that is ready to work – not tired from a hard day of removing junk.
- WHEN TO BOOK THE APPOINTMENT: Book your junk removal appointment in the middle of the week (Wednesday or Thursday). Weekends and days early in the week are often times fully booked.
- PREPARATION: Leave the junk where it lies – DO NOT bring the items to curbside. Typically, the labor and loading is included in the price. Professional junk removal companies are experts in removing unwanted items from WHEREVER they are located in your residence or office.
- DURING THE JUNK REMOVAL: Do not hide monitors or TV’s in boxes – we recycle them at no added cost! Tell the employees that you have a monitor or television to dispose of and they will make a point of recycling it!
- AFTER THE JUNK REMOVAL: If you have hazardous material, let the team know about it. They will provide you with the proper disposal authority.
PLEASE NOTE: Most of junk removal companies do not pick up hazardous waste (paint, batteries, cleaning solvents, gasoline, oil, etc).

Tips on how-to make your move go as smoothly as possible! Do you have some tips that are not listed here? Post them in the comments!
- Move on a weekday if you can, when banks, utilities and government offices are open.
- Order preprinted address labels with your new address. It makes the change-of-address process much easier.
- Keep a log to check when your utilities will transfer service. If you’re moving locally, leave the power and water on at your old address to allow you time after your move to clean the property.
- Choose a “packing room” ahead of time and box up a few items each day.
- Mark each box with its contents and destination room. That way, you and your labor helpers will know where each box belongs at your new home.
- To save time, call a professional carpet cleaner to shampoo your carpets when you book the moving company.
- If moving locally, you may want to leave your pets with a friend during moving day. Animals can become confused and frightened during a move.
