As detailed in previous blog posts, the College Hunks are skilled at small, light demolition projects such as sheds and hot tubs.

Until recently, we had little, to no experience with larger demolition projects. Last week the College Hunks tackled a 17-foot camper trailer that needed to be removed and recycled. This was no ordinary job and it has quite the back story. Sadly, the circumstances are most unfortunate. A homeless man who had been spending his evenings in the camper died and remained their unfound for weeks. Once the family who owned the camper found the dead homeless man, his body was removed and the trailer was cleaned by Crime Scene Cleaners. College Hunks Hauling Junk then got the call to remove the camper. It was quite the daunting task, but well within the capabilities of the multi-talented College Hunks. With Sawz-All in hand the Colleg Hunks cut the camper apart piece-by-piece and removed the entire camper in record time. Over 65% of the camper was recycled as well!

While this scenario is unlikely to happen, the College Hunks are always prepared to handle any demolition job sent their way. Next time you need something large demolished call the College Hunks and let them have at it.
Here is a quick synopsis of the article:

Looking to earn some extra cash during summer break, two college seniors put their heads together and came up with what would become a multimillion-dollar junk hauling company.

But they knew in order to succeed, they needed to stand out from the rest, so they came up with a catchy name and unique branding.

“We were just trying to come up with something catchy, and the name seemed to resonate with people and catch their attention as well as make them smile,” said Nick Friedman, co-founder and president of College Hunks Hauling Junk, who started the Tampa, Fla.-based company in June 2005 with longtime friend Omar Soliman. “Our clean-cut collegiate image, our progressive thinking in terms of recycling and community involvement, and our focus on providing our clients with a fun and memorable experience that is not typical of a trash hauling service.”

What started with one cargo van became a franchised business in 2007 and now has more than 40 trucks, 22 franchises and 26 locations across the country, making Soliman and Friedman the youngest franchisors in America.

Over 3 million people are compulsive hoarders. What was once a family’s dirty little secret has come to light and is now more treatable than ever. With treatment individuals who suffer from this problem can fix the issues they have been dealing with in the past and avoid potential further problems in the future.

Hoarding can cause more problems than simply aesthetic ones. While clutter does cause an unsightly mess it can also be the cause for much more serious problems. Families are torn apart, homes are lost, and childhoods are ruined because of hoarding. In serious cases the problem gets so bad that homes are deemed unlivable by the city and families are forced out. Children in extreme cases have been taken away from their parents because the home is no longer livable. This is an issue that is much more serious than most think and needs to be fixed in the early stages before the problem progresses to the point where the earlier mentioned problems arise.

Those who need help with hoarding should begin by seeking help from a professional who deals with the mental/medical causes of hoarding. This is the best place to start when attempting to cope with the problems that hoarding can cause. The next step is to get organized and de-clutter. A professional organizer who specializes in dealing with hoarders would be a great person to contact in regards to this. The professional organizer will help you sort through the mess and separate what should be kept from the items that need to be discarded. The organizer will be a wonderful resource and can objectively look at the items without emotions coming into play. The organizer will help sort the items and help prepare for the next step which is removal of the excess items. This is where a junk removal company such as College Hunks Hauling Junk, would come into play. These professional junk haulers will come in and remove the excess items so that the home/space can be clutter free and livable.

Like a modern-day alchemist, Washington, DC-based Envion has developed a system to produce oil from waste plastic. Considering that the price of crude oil is once again on the rise, that’s not unlike turning rocks into gold. Envion, founded in 2004, is keeping the lid on the details of its proprietary technology, but does reveal that it involves extracting the hydrocarbons from plastic, and that low temperature thermal cracking in a vacuum is part of the process.

According to the company’s website, the Envion Oil Generator is both efficient and environmentally sensitive, producing a net gain in energy recaptured, with vent gas generating electricity to drive the unit. The machine accepts most types of waste plastic, without the need for pre-sorting or cleaning, and is able to handle plastic currently sitting in landfill sites. Given that in the US only 4% of the 48 million tons of plastic waste produced every year gets recycled, there’s plenty of raw material for Envion to work with. The company claims that a single oil generator can convert 10,000 tons of plastic into more than 50,000 barrels of oil a year, at a cost of USD 17 per ton. Given the cost of the alternatives—landfill at USD 70–200 per ton, and recycling at USD 50–150 per ton—Envion looks set to clean up. Envion is also developing an application of the technology to convert car tires into oil.

Although some will challenge that more oil consumption is not what the planet needs, Envion has come up with a commercially attractive solution to the problem of plastic waste, which should appeal to local authorities for whom waste management is an increasing struggle.
For some, it may be their desk at work, for others, it may be a messy room at home. Regardless of where the clutter is, be it home or work, it can take its toll on you in one way or another. The most obvious cost of clutter is being unorganized, which leads to massive amounts of wasted time searching for misplaced items and documents. This wasted time can eventually lead to monetary losses. This is especially true of clutter in the work place. The amount of time wasted searching for documents lost in the pile on ones desk adds up to lost productivity and ultimately money for you and your employer. The time spent looking for lost papers and documents could be much better spent on activities that would generate income for you or revenue for your business. While the time wasted each day may seem minimal over an entire year, the losses can add up to a figure that would make anyone reconsider their poorly organized spaces. How much money is clutter costing YOU? Post your answer in the comments.
In many cases, the easiest solution to get rid of these unwanted books is to throw them out in the trash. While that is an environmentally incorrect option, there are multitudes of other ways to get rid of books that will benefit others and divert these books from going to the landfill. One option is to use an online reseller such as www.bluerectangle.com/buyback. This resource will buy old books back from you; they even pay for the shipping. This option not only will allow you to get rid of those books but also to make some money in the process. Other options include many charities and other non-profit organizations that books can be donated to. These organizations will then make good use of these by donating them into the hands of those who can use these old books. So, next time you are looking to get rid of old books don’t throw them out, recycle them!

In both homes and businesses, storage space is something that there never seems to be enough of. Since there just never seems to be enough space, many people choose to store excess items in a storage unit. Most of the time, the storage unit is intended to be a short term fix for the storage problem. While storage units are a good option for short term storage, most people end up leaving the items in storage much longer than they originally intended. This is due to the fact that the items in storage are clearly not needed in day-to-day life. If they were needed every day, the item would not be in a storage facility. Leaving the items long-term in storage becomes acceptable since, on a month-to-month basis, the prices for a storage unit rental don’t make a giant impact on the wallet. However, compounding over many months and years the costs of storage can be surprisingly high and ultimately may be a waste of money.

Let’s break it down: Considering that storage units can range from $50 to $400 dollars per month depending on size and location the low end price for a year would be $600. A larger space on the high end would cost the individual $4800 to store items they don’t even use for a year.

This is a cost that most people do not need to incur because the items they are paying to store have no intended future use. Clearly there is a better way to handle excess items that is not as nearly as costly. The price for a junk removal company to remove a full truckload, which is typically the amount of items that fits in a large storage unit, is on average $550. This one time expense will save money on storage and the items will also be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

We throw lots of things away from day to day but most of us don’t think about where these items are ultimately going to end up. The best place for unwanted items to end up is at a proper recycling facility. While not all items can be recycled, much of what we dispose of can be recycled and reused so it makes the least amount of impact on the environment.

A recent study conducted in Seattle showed that only 50 percent of what could be recycled is and that the national average is only 38 percent. The resources for recycling are in place, they are just not used enough. If everyone does their part we could easily see a 60 percent recycling rate nationwide. Most items can be broken down into the individual components and recycled. Old televisions are taken apart and the glass and lead are removed and reused. The glass is often times ground up back into sand and the lead is used to insulate hazardous waste containers.

Old furniture can also be recycled. The metal in furniture is generally melted down and reused and wood is ground up and used to make composite board which is used in new furniture and other wooden items. So much of what we dispose of is recyclable, but the problem is that the resources for recycling are not all easily accessible. This is where the College Hunks Hauling Junk can help. We are experts at recycling and will make sure any items we remove find the proper facility so as much as possible can be recycled.
