A Satisfied Client of College Hunks

Karla of Denver, CO has used College Hunks Hauling Junk twice – once in Janurary and again in July of 2009. She first needed our junk removal services down in Orlando and then in Denver. Here are her reviews of College Hunks Hauling Junk:

JANUARY 2009 REVIEW:
I used the service the first time in Orlando, Florida, to clean out my sisters house. Then, I used them to help clean out my house here in Denver. Both times, the entire process from first phone call to prompt arrival and exemplary service during their work makes them a company I will enjoy referring to my friends!

JULY 2009 REVIEW:
My experience with College Hunks Hauling Junk has been excellent, both in Orlando, Florida and here in Denver, Colorado. The positive experience starts with:

  • the customer service person who answers the phone in a friendly and helpful manner
  • the gentleman call before coming to let me know what time they arrive, and arrive on time
  • they are always clean cut and dressed professionally
  • they are friendly and helpful
  • they respond to any request when I have asked them for help moving something

Overall, I am greatly satisfied with the experience! The prices seem to have increased some this trip since the last two times I’ve used your services, but then that is true with most goods and services. I have recommended College Hunks Hauling Junk several times to friends and business associates, and appreciate your customer service and quality. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

The College Hunks are Famous

On Wednesday May, 20 2009 the Denver franchise of College Hunks Hauling Junk was featured on the 5 o’clock CBS news. The segment focused on our emphasis on recycling, donating, and reusing the items that we haul away. Emmy award winning journalist, Molly Hughes, interviewed us on May 5th while completing work for Karen Cosens, who we would like to thank for allowing CBS to film us while on the job site. Readers Digest: Dreamers – Hunks of Junk

COLLEGE HUNKS HAULING JUNK was recently profiled in the April 2009 Reader’s Digest edition – titled ‘Dreamers: Hunks of Junk’. The article gets into some more details about College Hunks Haulling Junk got its start and also has a great Q&A with CEO, Omar Soliman, and Nick Friedman, President. Some of the Q&A is excerpted below for your reading pleasure.

Q. What did friends say when you quit your jobs to start College Hunks?

A. Nick Friedman: They thought we were crazy. They said, “What about your résumé?”

Q. Any regrets?

A. Nick Friedman: No. I felt like I was stuck in a rat race at the consulting company. There was just too much time in the workday. Now that Omar and I have our own business, there isn’t enough time in the day to do everything we want to do.

Q. What’s the strangest thing you’ve found in someone’s junk?

A. Omar Soliman: There was the very long boa constrictor. We’ve also picked up World War II ammunition, a vintage set of Playboy magazines from the 1960s [the employee who found the collection sold it on eBay for $300], and baseballs signed by Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, which we keep on our desks.

Q. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned?

A. Omar Soliman: People don’t fail-systems do. If something goes wrong, you can’t blame an employee. You ask, What in our system went wrong?

Q. What are the pros and cons of hiring college kids?

A. Omar Soliman: They’re energetic, not as likely to complain or file grievances. The con is they’re likely to go out partying the night before and not show up for work.

College Hunks On An Airplane

Last month, a great article was published in Southwest Airline’s ‘Spirit’ Magazine. It not only describes what differentiates College Hunks Hauling Junk from our competition (the ‘cigar-chomping guy with 5 o’clock shadow, foul temper, and shifty eyes’) but also goes into detail on how we got our start. The writer tells our story well – “We put up fliers that said, ‘College Hunks Hauling Junk: Basement, Garage, Attic Clean-Outs,” Friedman recalls. “We knew there was something to the name; that we weren’t your typical junk haulers gave it an allure.”

Here is a sample of the Southwest article to whet your pallate:

For College Hunks Hauling Junk, their success is all about a clean-cut, professional image. It sets them apart from the stereotype of junk-haulers-the cigar-chomping guy with 5 o’clock shadow, foul temper, and shifty eyes. Take their bright orange cargo truck with its logo depicting the torso of a buff, green-shirted man with pearly whites, rock-solid biceps, and a backwards baseball cap. It gets your attention.

“We’re kind of the poolboys of the 21st century,” says Nick Friedman, 27, with a laugh. He’s tall and tan, a former Pomona College basketball player, with a cleft chin and close-cropped blonde hair. Today he’s dressed in the College Hunks uniform: a green, logoed polo shirt and beige khakis. His partner, Omar Soliman, 26, shares his healthy tan and bright teeth. Despite their own inarguable swoonworthiness, the original hunks say they’re about more than just good looks.

From the beginning, a positive attitude and driving ambition have defined the College Hunks’ business plan. Like many young entrepreneurs, Friedman and Soliman got their start working out of a parent’s home. Friends from their high school days in the Washington, D.C., area, the two went their separate ways during college: Friedman to Pomona in California, and Soliman to the University of Miami. They kept in touch, and every summer they’d reunite in D.C. The two would often deliver orders from the furniture store owned by Soliman’s mother using her dented cargo van.
